There is a lot going on that leads up to that cup of freshly brewed coffee you may be drinking right now. It all begins at the farms all over the world and the people that operate them. While many geographical factors contribute to the chemical make-up of the bean such as altitude, climate, soil composition, amount of sunlight, etc., we look to the people aspect of the equation
as well.

Take, for example, our Colombian Mujeres de Guayata. In 1998, 30 women farmers banded together with an unyielding faith that they could make a positive difference in one of the smaller regions of Colombia that has been otherwise notorious for political/violent problems. We loved their coffee so much that we made it our house coffee for our local guests. The all-women co-op is brimming with unbridled optimism and is currently seeking to become certified organic, as it is organically grown already.
Two tremendous programs that are gaining more recognition for creating awareness for product identification are the Fair Trade and Certified Organic labeling programs.
Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based model of international trade which promotes the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods.
Organic certification is a certification process for producers of organic food and other organic agricultural products. Requirements to obtain an Organic Certification include- avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, etc) and genetically modified organisms; use of farmland that has been free from chemicals for a number of years (often, three or more); keeping detailed written production and sales records (audit trail); maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products; undergoing periodic on-site inspections. While both programs are internationally recognized in aptly labeling products and/or the production process, many products meet one or both certification requirements but have yet to be certified. Look for these certifications on a number of our offerings on this web site.
As with anything of high quality, it is the people behind the product that make it so. The passion behind growing and producing the coffee coupled with our passion of roasting, delivers to you, the coffee connoisseur, the highest quality of coffee available anywhere.
